Just One Look
Harlan Coben, said to be ''
the modern master of the hook-and-twist luring you in on the first
page… only to shock you on the last '' according to Dan Brown
(author of The DaVinci Code), is an American best-selling author of
mystery novels and thrillers who was born in 1962 in Newark, New
Jersey. His novels are critically-acclaimed and it's probably the reason why Coben is the first author who has won the three major prices of American suspense literature (Edgar-, Shamus- and Anthony Award). In 2004, he published Just One Look, a thriller which
deals with Grace Lawson, a woman married to a guy called Jack Lawson
with whom she has got two children. After she had picked them up from school, Grace Lawson looks through a newly developed
set of photographs in which she finds a mysterious picture from
fifteen years ago. At first, Grace doesn't manage to recognize a
single person in the five strangers that the photo is showing but
then she realizes that there is actually one person that she knows very
well: her husband. Later, as soon as her husband comes back home, she
shows him the picture and asks him if it's really him on it, just for
the record. Jack answers no but Grace keep doubting.
Then, while she's waiting in the bedroom, she hears the sound of a
car starting. Consequently, she looks through the window and sees her
husband leaving their home although he didn't inform her of his departure or even explain to her why he decided to drive off and, furthermore, right after they talked about the mysterious picture.
Therefore, the next day, Grace decides to inquire about the people
on it because she feels that Jack is in trouble and that, besides, this picture
is the reason why.
